Will Ronaldo Get United’s No. 7 Shirt?
Cristiano Ronaldo, who is famously known for wearing the number seven shirt throughout his career, might be forced to choose another number for the 2021/22 Premier League season.
On Friday, 27 August, United confirmed that Ronaldo is returning to Old Trafford from Juventus this season, after transfer terms were agreed with the Portugal forward.
However, his iconic shirt number is not available. Edinson Cavani is the current holder of the club’s number seven shirt and is reportedly not keen to give it up.
Jadon Sancho once made a request for the number during his transfer negotiations and the Uruguayan forward refused. According to reports he could do the same with Ronaldo.
Regardless of Cavani’s decision, another challenge is the EPL rule book, which stipulates that once the season kicks off, players are prohibited from swapping shirts during campaigns.
Ronaldo will have to settle for another number until the end of this season unless the EPL grants Man United a special, never-seen-before exemption.
The Portuguese superstar is allowed to use the number seven in the Champions League, as squad lists and numbers are yet to be finalised.
